UIET, Kathua Campus (JU) organizes an Awareness Talk on “Domestic Violence and Women Empowerment”
JAMMU, June 09: University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Kathua Campus, University of Jammu organized an awareness talk titled “Domestic Violence and Women Empowerment” for the students of UIET, MCA, MBA and English departments of the Campus. Ms. Kiran Thakur (Advocate), Certified Cyber Security Expert and Human Rights Lawyer, enrolled with J&K State Bar Council with an experience of 10 years in practice at Jammu & Kashmir High Court and District Courts was the resource person. Committed to create awareness and fostering change, Adv. Thakur actively engages in domestic violence awareness campaigns and working tirelessly to promote a safer and more equitable society for all.
In her talk, she focused that the violence against women and girls is regarded as a global pandemic that affects one in every three women across their lifetime. She categorically explained the term: violence- restriction or not providing the freedom that a person has a right to, which made everyone aware of the fact that violence can have many forms and is not restricted only to the physical form only. She also stated that a large number of cases of domestic violence are reported every day and the reason behind such cases is the lack of education, awareness of their rights, illiteracy and unemployment etc.
The majority of these cases include all those women who are completely dependent on their spouses for everything they require. Further, she threw light on how women should not succumb to the pressures of society at large. By capturing the attention of the crowd, she elaborated on the different laws and acts pertaining to domestic violence. Besides, she very elaborately explained women empowerment as the overall improvement of women regarding their awareness of human rights, legal and education rights along with their social enhancement. In addition, she accentuated that the sense of freedom is also a part of empowering the women and they should be made aware of all the resources (police, domestic violence helpline 181, protection officers, service providers, one stop centers etc.) that are available for their assistance.
Dr.MeenakshiKilam, Rector, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu praised the today’s speaker and further stated that all the information that was provided in the talk was really very beneficial for today’s generation including men and women. She stressed that women are considered as the epitome of wealth and power, therefore they should know about their rights, the laws that are made for their protection and security whether they are married or in live-in relationships. If we wish to see a nation that develops economically on the global front, then it’s very important to have “Women Empowerment”. Dr.Kilam while emphasizing on the women empowerment stressed upon encouraging women of all sections of society to make their own decisions and dare to stand for oneself and for other women folk to create a protective environment so that no human rights violation in the form of domestic violence can happen. She further stressed that such lectures on social issues should be organized in future also for the awareness of students.
Dr. Sourabh Shastri, I/c Coordinator, UIET, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu welcomed the audience and introduced the eminent resource person. He suggested that the students should attend such informative and motivational sessions so that they can also be made aware of existing matters of concern in the society.
