University of Jammu kick starts its innovative ‘Waste to Wealth’ Initiative

JAMMU, December 06: Department of Environmental Sciencesand Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU), University of Jammu under its ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative organized a one-day extension programme on upcyclingof Sticks and Twigs lying as waste in the lawns and gardens of the University.

The students and volunteers from the Department were divided into groups and were made to collect the sticks and twigs from the University campus.They showcased their creativity and talent byformingalphabets out of sticks and twigs under the supervision of Mr. Vikas Khajuria, Waste Sculpture Artist. These alphabets werethenused to write the name of the Department on the outside fence of the Department.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students and volunteers. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Headof the department said that since the University campus has been declared a green campus, all these initiatives at the University level will contribute towards improving environmental sustainability under the Mission LiFE initiative of the government.

‘The active participation of the students makesthem environmentally consciousasit helps themto understand the importance of conservation, recycling, and upcyclingin our daily lives’, Dr. Deepika Slathia, the teacher in charge of the event said.She added that similar concepts using other types of waste materials shall be replicated in other departments of the University.Among others who participated in the event included Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria, Dr. Ravinder and Dr. Ranjan Sharma.
