University of Jammu organizes Community Sensitization Programme at Bahu Fort, Jammu

Jammu June 6:- Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu organized one day ‘Community Sensitization Programme on Solid Waste Management’ at Ward No 48, Bahu Fort Area, Jammu to commemorate World Environment Day 2023.

The purpose of the sensitization programme was to create awareness and increase the knowledge of the local community regarding the causes and consequences of unscientific disposal of waste, and the potential solutions and benefits of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Head of the department said that there is an urgent need to combat plastic pollution under the global theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and such awareness campaigns at the community level will contribute towards meeting ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ under ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE)’ initiative of the Government of India. Prof. Malaviya urged people to stop use of single-use plastic products (SUPs) to control the menace of plastic pollution. Earlier the students of Department of Environmental Sciences took out an awareness rally on ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ in Bahu fort and the adjoining areas.

Later the students of the department were divided into groups and they interacted with the residents and made them aware regarding the harmful effects of waste especially the use of plastic material and gave them easy solutions for effective management of such waste. Among others who participated in the event included Dr. Deepika Slathia, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Mr. Sham Lal (Corporator, Bahu Fort) and residents of ward no. 48, Bahu Fort, Jammu.
