Waste to Wealth Eco Gallery “Eco-Giri” Concluded at Central University of Jammu

JAMMU, 14 Nov 2023. The Department of Environmental Sciences at the Central University of Jammu (CUJ), in collaboration with Students for Development (SFD), has successfully concluded a two-day event titled “Eco-Giri.” This event marked the pioneering initiative of a larger campaign focused on upcycling waste into wealth and using the proceeds for the education of underprivileged children residing near the campus.

The “Ecogiri” event took place at CUJ and showcased a remarkable collection of items made from waste materials collected from the campus and adjoining villages, skillfully crafted by PG students of the department. The event aimed to demonstrate how waste materials can be creatively transformed into valuable resources, aligning with the principles of sustainable living and environmental conservation.

The event attracted students, faculty, and environmental enthusiasts from the university and beyond, serving as an inspiring platform for the promotion of eco-friendly practices and community engagement. Attendees had the opportunity to witness and purchase a wide array of upcycled products, which ranged from handcrafted home decor to fashion accessories, and more. The upcycled items not only showcased the innovative potential of waste materials but also contributed to the promotion of a circular economy and sustainable consumption.

Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sanjeev Jain appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Students for Development, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in promoting environmental awareness and community welfare. The Vice-Chancellor expressed hope for the continued success of this campaign and its lasting impact on both the university and the local community.

Prof. Richa Kothari, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Central University of Jammu, expressed his enthusiasm for the “Eco-Giri” event and the broader campaign, stating, “We believe that this initiative is not only an environmental responsibility but also a social one.
