World Blood Donor Day-2023 celebrated at GMC Baramulla

BARAMULLA, June 14: To mark the commemoration of ‘World Blood Donor Day’ being observed today across the world under the theme, “Give Blood, Give Plasma: Share Life, Share often”, the Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla Wednesday organized a day long programme at Auditorium Hall here to mark the celebration.
The grand event was presided over by Principal Government Medical College Baramulla, Dr. (Prof) Ruby Reshi .The event was graced by the chief guest T.R.Raina (President International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT)) while as Medical superintendent GMC Baramulla, Principal Degree college and Principal women’s college Baramulla besides other faculty members of GMC Baramulla were also present in the programme.
Many Non-government organizations (NGO) like Care for Humanity trust, Al-Imaan Youth Foundation, Blood Network Baramulla, Al Ummah Welfare Foundation, Red Cross Society Baramulla and HDFC Baramulla also participated in the event.
On the occasion, Principal GMC Baramulla while addressing the gathering elaborated the importance of blood donation and gave a brief awareness about the event.
She asserted to recognize and promote the values of voluntary unpaid blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion; raise awareness of the need for donating blood voluntarily.
Addressing the programme, the chief guest highlighted the importance of blood donation and its health benefits. He said that this day is celebrated to support national blood transfusion services, blood donor organizations and other non government organizations in strengthening and expanding their voluntary blood donor programmes by reinforcing national and local campaigns.
While disseminating the requirements of blood donation, T.R.Raina said that Blood and blood products are essential resources for effective management of women suffering from bleeding associated with pregnancy and childbirth; children suffering from severe anaemia due to malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of haemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions; victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters and accidents; as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.
He also reiterated that the need for blood is universal, but access to blood for all those who need it is not.

Earlier, Head of the Department, Pathology and Blood Centre, Professor Parveen Shah gave a brief introduction regarding the event and achievements of Blood bank department of Government Medical College Baramulla.
Meanwhile, the Staff members of the Blood Centre GMC Baramulla were felicitated with the appreciation certificates by the chief guest and Principal GMC Baramulla for their contribution to organize the event.
Furthermore, Volunteers from Army, NGOs and other citizens donated 70 points of Blood to mark the celebration of World Blood Donor Day.
