World Heritage Day celebrated at Leh palace
Leh, Apr 19, 2024: The Archaeological Survey of India, Mini Circle, Leh in collaboration with Archives, Archaeological and Museum, UT Ladakh and Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation celebrated World Heritage Day on April 18 at Leh Palace.
Dr Sonam Spalzin who works with the Archaeological Survey of India, in her welcome speech spoke about the importance of world heritage day and how this day is an opportunity to spread awareness among the younger generation especially the students.
The chief guest at the celebration was Programme Head, AIR, Leh, Sonam Wangchuk.
Additionally, Founder, Himalayan Heritage Foundation, Sonam Wangchuk talked about how Ladakh has an abundance of monuments, folk songs and folk stories.
Assistant Professor, History, UoL, Dr Phuntsog Angmo spoke about the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh and how there are ample research opportunities for the students of Ladakh. She also talked about how Ladakh is home to both tangible and intangible heritage.
Padma Shri Morup Namgyal, special guest, enlightened the audience with stories and songs that revolve around Leh palace and encouraged everyone especially the students to know about Ladakh through its stories.
Dorjay Stakmo, special guest, sang two folk songs for the audience and the guests and audience also participated in performing the traditional Ladakhi dance.
The celebration ended with the presentation of mementos.
Other special guests included Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Tashi Jorgyas, Wangyal Tsering and Gyen Nyantak.
